Creating and Sending SMS Campaigns in Dewy

If SMS is enabled on your Dewy account, you can send one-time SMS campaigns to a list of patients: a flash promotion, a schedule change, an event reminder. SMS campaigns are separate from your automated nurture sequences, which Dewy builds and runs for you.

The SMS campaign builder allows you to personalize messages, include shortened links, attach images, and schedule messages for delivery.

Before You Send SMS Messages

Before sending SMS campaigns, please note the following requirements:

  • SMS must be activated on your account. The Dewy team handles this during onboarding. See Getting Started with SMS.
  • Your business must complete A2P 10DLC registration if sending messages to U.S. phone numbers
  • Contacts must have explicit consent (opt-in) to receive SMS messages
  • SMS campaigns can only be sent to contacts who have opted in to receive SMS communication
  • Every message is sent in the format [Practice Name]: message. Reply STOP to opt out, which eats into your character count. Plan for roughly 120 characters of your own text in a standard SMS.

Creating an SMS Campaign

To create a new SMS message:

  1. Navigate to SMS in your Dewy account
  2. Click New Message

You will then complete the following fields:

Message Name

This is an internal name used to organize your campaigns. Contacts will not see this name.

Sender Name

This identifies who the message is from (for example, your practice name).

Message Content

Type the message you want to send. You can personalize messages using contact fields such as first name. The message editor will display the character count so you can stay within SMS limits.

Shortened Links

You can automatically shorten URLs included in your message. This helps reduce character usage and allows Dewy to track link clicks.

Attach Image (MMS)

You can attach an image to your message, which converts it into an MMS message. This feature may only be available in certain regions.

Select Recipient List

Choose the list or segment of contacts who have opted in to receive SMS messages.

Schedule

  • You can send the message immediately or schedule it to send at a specific date and time.
  • When scheduling messages, avoid sending during non-working hours, when carriers may restrict delivery.
  • As you create your message, the campaign builder will display a preview of how the message will appear on a mobile device.

SMS Campaign Analytics

Once your SMS campaign is sent, Dewy will display real-time performance data including:

  • Messages sent
  • Messages delivered
  • Link clicks

To track link clicks, you must enable link shortening and tracking when creating the campaign.

SMS vs MMS Messages

SMS

A standard text-only message with a limit of 160 characters.

MMS

A message that includes text and an image. MMS messages allow more content and may support up to 1600 characters depending on the carrier.

For best MMS delivery performance, images should be under 600 KB. Supported image formats typically include:

  • PNG
  • JPEG
  • GIF

If images are too large, carriers may resize or block them.

Using AI to Generate SMS Messages

Dewy includes an AI message generator that can help you quickly create SMS campaigns. To use AI when creating a message:

  1. Open the SMS campaign builder
  2. Enter a short prompt describing the message you want to create
  3. Click Generate with AI

The AI will generate a suggested SMS message that you can edit before sending. For best results, provide a clear and specific prompt.

Example prompt:

“Create an SMS message promoting a $50 off offer this week.”

Example AI-generated message:

“Limited-time offer: Save $50 on your next appointment. Spots are limited. Schedule now: [link]”

If the generated message is not exactly what you want, you can adjust the prompt and generate a new version.

SMS Segmentation

Dewy allows you to segment contacts based on engagement with SMS campaigns.

You can create segments such as:

  • Contacts who clicked a link in an SMS campaign
  • Contacts who did not click a link in an SMS campaign

This allows you to create targeted follow-up campaigns or re-engagement messages based on SMS activity.

Best Practices for SMS Campaigns

To maintain strong deliverability and compliance:

  • Only send SMS messages to contacts who have explicitly opted in
  • Clearly identify your business in the message
  • Avoid sending messages too frequently
  • Always provide a way for recipients to opt out

Following these guidelines helps ensure your messages are delivered reliably and that your SMS campaigns remain compliant with carrier regulations.
